This section is dedicated to explanations of various aspects of Japanese culture, which often show up in anime, and can differ from our expectations. Often an understanding of some of the basic differences lead to a better appreciation of a show, and often are the only way to understand some jokes. Good studios often provide notes to cultural references, on-screen or in liner notes, for much the same purpose. This is intended to be something of a compendium of cultural information we feel can come in handy, if there is something you have a question on that is not listed here, feel free to email us at sos-discuss@sos-anime.org.

Valentines Day - On Valentines Day Japanese women give chocolate to men. This chocolate can be bought, but is often homemade. The giving is not limited to one person, since it is socially bad to not receive chocolate, women give chocolate to all their male friends. For that special someone, more expensive chocolate, or a gift separate this from the others. Men do nothing, their day is a month later on white day.

White Day - White day is a Japanese creation where the men reciprocate for Valentines day. Men often give white chocolate or cookies as gifts, and often give to multiple women, with a special gift for their special lady.
